Liv Ullman is the story here. She is narrator, both on-screen and off, describing her feelings towards Bergman from beginning to end. Her beauty has diminished over the years, but her talent, charm and personality are still very much in evidence. Excerpts from 'The Passion of Anna' and 'Scenes from a Marriage', among other Bergman films, were used to show Ms. Ullman's emotional attitude during times of their intimate relationship. As Bergman himself was the scriptwriter, the lines of co-stars Max von Sydow and Erland Josephson almost seemed to affirm Bergman's concurrence with her descriptions of him. Ms. Ullman often referred to the demons Bergman carried, without once referring to him as an evil person himself. In fact, her treatment of his memory was loving, respectful and filled with admiration for his talents... A dark yet joyous film.
