    The Book Thief

What a welcomed contrast after seeing the very violent and crude 12 years slave and Oldboy. I thought this movie was far more than just a family drama about life in Germany during WWII and the struggles of a little girl to find meaning through it all. It's also and perhaps mainly a movie about books and how they keep civilizations from falling apart by opening people's minds to different ways of living and thinking. The actors were good for the most part (Rush really stands out here, no surprise) I thought the kids were OK but I couldn't feel a strong connection between the boy and the girl. It seemed forced at times. I wasn't sure what to make of the unnecessary "grim reaper" narration. I didn't think it was needed as the story stood on its own without it. Regardless, it was a heart warming tale with just the right amount of drama and feel good moments.
