The Lord of the Rings books are widely known as masterpieces of English literature. Bringing them to the screen is an enormous task and undoubtedly all will not be pleased with the results. Largely, I believe the movie is a resounding success and any of the inevitable smaller failures are grossly overshadowed. The acting is superb, the effects superb, the scenery superb, the storyline superb. The ending is a bone of contention but Jackson must be commended for remaining true to the books. Really, any other ending would have changed the story too drastically so live with it. Those that criticize the film are more likely expressing their distaste for the film's genre rather than the movie itself. That form of prejudice always seems to exist in film reviews. My advice to people who hate Fantasy and Sci-Fi... don't go to those types of movies, no one is forcing you. However, if you do like Fantasy, this is a must see. Even if Fantasy isn't your bag, if you appreciate the masterpiece that Tolkien created, this is a must see. But if you go to the theatre with a closed mind and a chip on your shoulder, spare us all your complaining and stay at home.
