Isaac Davis, a 42-year-old comedy writer from New York, has recently been left by his wife, Jill. She's now with another woman, Connie, and is working on a book about their former marriage. Meanwhile, Isaac is involved with Tracy, a 17-year-old high schooler, though he keeps pointing out that their relationship won't last. Before long, he breaks things off with her to move in with Mary Wilke, who happens to be the lover of his best friend, Yale Pollack.
