What starts out as a fairly solid scifi-outing ultimately devolves into Villeneuve's Terrence Malick mixtape. The actors all do their best, but the characters are fairly rote. The film doesn't even really have a functional antagonist. And while there's certainly an ominous air to it, it doesn't feel tense so much as flat. Still, it occurred to me that, based on style alone I could understand why Villeneuve has been tapped for the Blade Runner sequel.
