I this this is an ok movie. I'm not a big fan of Ben Affleck, or of 20s era crime novel adaptations, or even Mr. Lehane. The movie is beautifully shot, the actors all hit their marks, and the story and characters proceed without fuss to plausible conclusions. It's not too violent (there's some brutality it's but not prolonged), the romantic subplots are surprisingly well-portrayed (given contemporary theatrical styles) I even have to respect the realistic period car chase scene, and the portrayal of many non-pc attitudes of the time while not presenting stereotypic (but not quite iconic) characters. Might have been better financially as a mini-series, but probably not as pretty.
