    The Big Short

This is a well acted movie about a subject most people do not understand. Brilliant acting by Steve Carell. I did not think he had it in him. I became concerned about the lending industry when I watched HGTV's " House Hunters" during 2006 - 2007. For years before this time, people would buy homes on this show and be required to place 20 percent down. Then things started to change. Some housing deals at 10 percent became common, then 5 percent, and finally 0 percent. Very young couples were buying very expensive homes with elaborate features. These, of course, were very risky loans. The film shows how this practice became greatly expanded in the banking industry ultimately leading to the financial crisis in 2007 and 2008. After trillions of dollars were lost, thousands of jobs and lives ruined, the government bailout occurred. You would hope that we would learn from this disaster and put some controls in place. Have we? Apparently not. Today the Dow Jones is crashing and has fallen about 17 percent from its peak. CDOs that precipitated the crash in 2007 have not been regulated and are heading us towards another financial disaster.

This is an important film. The people that need to see it are not seeing it. When will we learn?
