Right from the start, one cannot use Mars as a planet to base a story on. We now know that Mars does not support life and is nothing but a big, red, cold desert with no breathable atmosphere. We have advanced in our understanding of the universe and sci-fi must have a believability factor or it is in mere childish fantasy.

Edgar Rice Burroughs who wrote the original story in 1912 didn't know that Mars couldn't support life. In a movie like this you have to suspend your rational mind and enjoy it for what it is, nothing more than a fantasy and an entertainment. It has imaginative set design, amazing special effects, and a pretty good story, what else could you possibly want?
The movie is based on the Barsoom series written 100 years ago by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Most of the "modern" science fiction is based on this work.
Well won't you be the surprised one when they finally reveal all the information regarding the now extinct underground cities on Mars. I hope your paradigm reality shifty won't be to big a shock...
It's a movie not a documentary.
