Interesting concept... woman goes on a spiritual quest of sorts, to try to figure out her life. Granted I have not read the book, so not sure how the original story played out. Rate this film as perhaps a 6 or 7 out of 10, partly due to the casting. I like Reese Witherspoon, enjoyed her in 'Walk the Line'... although here, I think she is out of her element. She may be trying to go for something grittier... still have a hard time imagining her having random sex with strangers. In an interview, she admitted being uncomfortable with some of the sex scenes... would like to think an actress could throw themselves into any project & make it work, but I still think some of the essence of who they truly are (as a person) still shines through. So perhaps a different casting of the main character might have helped, although wondering if the film would have gained as much fanfare, without Ms Witherspoon's star power... hard to say. The quest itself, could have been more introspective. For someone spending hordes of time completely alone, the mind can close in on itself, think they tried to show that in the film, via flashbacks... but the arduous soul searching was still not really showing itself in her journey through the desert. Would suggest waiting for the video or release on Netflix.
