Nostalgic for their childhood in the wake of their mother's death, sisters Mary and Marie decide to spend a final, idyllic summer in her home, where they grew up. Exceptionally close, the pair are content to be alone, swimming, exploring, reminiscing and recreating the golden moments of their youth -- their deeply intimate bond growing even stronger. Their insular world is soon disrupted when they meet Peter, a local handyman hired to fix the house before it is sold.
Both sisters find themselves drawn to Peter but it is Mary who initially expresses her desire for him. When Marie and Peter begin to fall in love, Mary is left feeling heartbroken, angry and betrayed. Over the course of the summer the love-triangle escalates and eventually leads to a heartbreaking and near-fatal climax that forces the sisters to reconsider the intensity of their bond and shows them that they must grow up and learn to live separate lives.
