Amy (Dorylia Calmel) was born in France to a white father and a mother from Burkina Faso; she was abandoned in childhood and raised by adoptive parents. Seeking a connection with her mother's family, Amy travels from Paris to Burkina, where everywhere she feels herself a stranger and outsider. Meanwhile, back in Paris, Ester (Nathalie Richard) a middle-class, middle-aged white woman, seeks out lessons in the Dioula language from Mariam (Assita Ouédraogo), a Burkinabé cleaning woman.
