A story about the ties between four sisters, Martha, Cécile, Pauline and Paulette. Pauline, sixty-six years old, is unable to read, write or put jam on her own bread. She lives with Martha in a cottage in a Flemish town. Pauline idolizes her sister Paulette, a shopkeeper and amateur opera singer. Everything changes with Martha's sudden death. Paulette plans the funeral and Cécile, the youngest sister, returns home from Brussels. When the will is read, it reveals that Martha has bequeathed her estate to her three sisters, but Cécile and Paulette will only get their due if one or the other agrees to care for Pauline. Neither is willing to accept the job, so over the next few weeks Pauline is bounced back and forth before Paulette takes her to an institution.
