Gunnar is a kindly (if socially inept) older man, who extends a hand to a functionary who has come to let him know that his idyllic farmstead in the Icelandic wilds is being expropriated. When Gunnar moves to the city, his initially rocky dealing with his 10-year-old neighbour Ari turns into a bond founded on their shared loneliness. A misunderstanding by Ari's feuding and neglectful parents soon threatens their bond.
