This 2-hour tour-de-force, Tom, Tom, The Piper's Son, was constructed by re-photographing and dissecting a 10-minute short made in 1905 by Billy Bitzer (the photographer of D.W. Griffith's Birth of a Nation). Jacobs pursues a deep analysis into its visual elements: slowing down, freezing action and examining small, abstracted areas of the frame. The short is presented unaltered at the beginning and again at the end of the film, strikingly demonstrating the impact that a deep analysis of the image can have on our perception of the cinema.
