During the German Occupation of France, Lieutenant Fontaine, a member of the Resistance, is arrested and sentenced to death, leaving him to await execution in a stark prison cell where escape becomes his sole obsession. Day by day, he methodically prepares in a atmosphere thick with tension, fashioning tools like a sharpened spoon to jimmy the lock, along with ropes and hooks for his daring plan. As the critical moment arrives, he seizes the opportunity to break free, bringing his new cellmate along in a gripping bid for liberty.
