German artist-turned-filmmaker Helene Hegemann makes her feature debut with Axolotl Overkill, an adaption of her own controversial first novel, about the explosion that is the life of a teen girl named Mifti. Jumping between Mifti's friendship with a television star, her affair with a mysterious woman, and her chaotic half-family, Hegemann explores trauma, love, and generally not giving a fuck. Much like an axolotl -- an amphibious creature permanently stuck in an infantile state and unable to leave the water as a result -- Mifti seems to exist inside a bubble that shields her innocence from the dangers of the world.
