2005 Documentary
52 minutes
For 900 days during World War II, the Wehrmacht surrounded Leningrad, holding the city in a state of siege. More than a million people died of starvation and cold, but the city survived the blockade. Sergeï Loznitsa unearthed long-hidden archival footage that bears witness to the suffering of the civilian population and the hardships of daily life under siege. The extraordinary soundtrack, meticulously composed by Vladimir Golovnitsky, brings the silent images to life in a compelling and powerful manner. A brilliant reminder "if one was needed" that the cinematographers of the Soviet era were among the greatest in world cinema.
