This beautifully wrought, thoroughly spellbinding film is both a dark indictment of Fascist Spain and one of cinema's most haunting evocations of the mysteries of childhood. Ana Torrent, young star of Victor Erice's Spirit of the Beehive, plays unhappy Ana, a fantasy-prone little girl who blames her father for her mother's death. Her performance, said Variety, 'is nothing short of fabulous.' Geraldine Chaplin stars in the double role of Ana's mother and Ana as a grown-up, desperately searching her childhood memories for some understanding of the forces that now plague her.
