A young aspiring author (Vogler) sets off on a journey to find himself, broaden his horizons, and rid himself of the gloomy irritability and despondency that plague him in his hometown. But, in the end, he must face the painful truth that, unlike in the 19th century novels that he admires, a journey alone no longer leads to the desired goal of self-transformation. Instead, his path leads him into an unbroken series of failures, through his own fault and that of all the people he meets on his way.
