Germany Year Zero

In post-war Berlin a family struggles amid ruins: the ailing father is tended by his daughter while his eldest son, a former SS member, hides from occupation authorities without a ration card. Twelve-year-old Edmund sustains them through petty trades during his wanderings, earning neighbors' disapproval. He meets an ex-Nazi teacher who recalls Hitler's call to eliminate the weak. After the father enters hospital and declares he would be better off dead, Edmund poisons him. The teacher refuses involvement, so Edmund wanders the rubble and leaps from a fifth-floor ruin.
