The year is 1944. The war is coming to an end. Finland is about to withdraw its alliance with Nazi Germany and end its war with Russia. A Russian captain (Ivan) on his way to being court marshalled narrowly escapes sure death when an airplane bombs his envoy. A local Lapp woman (Anni), an isolated farmer who has been left alone since her husband left to fight in the war many years before, saves him. Watching over this scene is a Finnish soldier (Veiko), accused of being a pacifist by his compatriots, and forced to wear a nazi uniform while shackled to a rock, knowing that the Russian soldiers had been given orders to shoot nazi soldiers on sight. He finally frees himself and finds the farm where Anni is tending to the ailing Ivan. At first there is strife between the elder brutish Russian captain and the relieved young Finn, but an unlikely bond develops between the three characters, who cannot speak each others language, and who eventually divest themselves of the war and its boundary markers.
