L'homme dans l'ombre

In a small Texas town during World War II, Nita Longley (Sissy Spacek), mother of two young sons, endures shunning by respectable locals after her marital breakup and unwanted attentions from lowlife men. Working a dead-end job as a telephone operator, she finds comfort with a passing sailor (Eric Roberts) following her split from a drunken husband (Sam Shepard). After he leaves, Nita plans a fresh start with her boys but must first confront backstabbing townspeople and the violent Triplett brothers (William Sanderson and Tracey Walker).
