Given what we've learned about the intelligence and emotions of animals, isn't it time we rethink how we treat both pets and wildlife? Through visits to three animal shelters and the stories they reveal, we see that animals aren't so different from us -- they're smart, emotional, loyal, stubborn, and sometimes even sneaky. Yet, we often view them as lesser beings and, to meet our own needs, subject them to lives of suffering. Could there be a better way to coexist with animals?
