Humdrum Doctor, Charles Bovary marries young beauty, Emma, after his first wife dies. Emma's idealistic notions of romance cause her to become disillusioned and ill. Considering her health, they move to a new town for the birth of their daughter, Berthe. Emma's unhappiness ensues and she opts for excitement in the arms of other men. She incurs major debts by borrowing money to finance her unfaithfulness, which she is court ordered to repay. Not wanting Charles to discover her treachery, she desperately attempts to raise the money, with no luck. Out of guilt and anguish, she poisons herself. Soon after, Charles discovers his wife's infidelities and dies, leaving their daughter a meager and laborious future.
