Memory

Born in Feodosia, a Ukrainian city on the Crimean coast, Vladlena Sandu moves to Grozny in Chechnya after her parents' divorce, where war soon engulfs and defines her childhood. Years later, she transforms these memories into lyrical, allegorical, political, and surrealistic images that trace how violence shapes children and passes from one generation to the next, and whether its cycle can ever be broken.
