Mueda, Memory and Massacre

On June 16, 1960, in Mueda, Mozambique, the Portuguese army carried out the execution of six hundred inhabitants as directed by the Portuguese governor. Following Mozambique's independence, the residents of Mueda annually commemorate this event through a theatrical re-enactment, where community members portray the roles of the perpetrators, the victims, and the onlookers.
