Private-eye Philip Marlowe is hired by Moose Malloy, a petty crook who has just served a seven year prison sentence. Malloy had hoped to find his girlfriend, Velma, waiting for him at his release, but he discovered that she had been missing for six years. Although Malloy's desperation is clear, the complexity of the whole affair overwhelms Marlowe, who learns that nothing is known, least of all everybody's motivations for either finding or hiding the girl...
