Successful and well-liked, Dr. Noah Praetorius (Cary Grant) falls victim to a witch hunt orchestrated by Professor Elwell (Hume Cronyn), who scorns Praetorius's unorthodox medical views and probes his enigmatic bond with the ever-present Mr. Shunderson. Tensions escalate when Praetorius befriends young Deborah Higgins, driven to suicidal despair by the prospect of bearing a child from her ex-boyfriend, a military reservist summoned to the Korean War and killed in action.
