Despite this, a vibrant underground music scene began to develop, spearheaded by the Jamaican diaspora, which included figures such as Jackie Mittoo, Wayne McGhie, and a young Jay Douglas. These artists faced challenges such as racism and indifference, yet they significantly influenced Canadian music and culture, though their contributions were not widely recognized at the time. Six decades on, Jay Douglas continues to promote Jamaican music and has finally achieved the recognition and respect he has long sought.
