Taeko and her 6-year-old son Keita, a reigning Othello champion, are living happily with Taeko's new husband Jiro in a cozy apartment in a small Japanese city. Across the courtyard in the same complex live Jiro's parents, who are still unable to fully accept their son's marriage to a divorced mother. But when an unexpected event brings a key figure from their past back into their lives, the family must put voice to emotional truths they've conveniently kept hidden from one another for years.
