Thirteen-year-old Sasha Grigoriev lives and studies in a special boarding school for difficult children. His mother died and his father, whom he's never met, is in prison. Longing for freedom, Sasha occasionally escapes from the school, and during one such outing, inadvertently discovers the address of the prison where his father is held. Sasha sets out for the jail, which is thousands of miles away. He goes through Moscow and other cities and towns, meeting both kind and cruel people before he arrives. Upon hearing his story, the prison ward breaks the rules and let Sasha visit his father. During the few days they spend together, they grow to understand each other and realize there is hope that they can begin a new life in the future.
