Sixteen-year-old Heidi (heart-wrenchingly played by Abbie Cornish in a breakthrough role) lives with her mother and seeks physical and emotional connection through short-lived sexual encounters, embarking on a sensory journey that teaches her the true meaning of love, family, and friendship. Fleeing Canberra for Jindabyne, she meets Joe (played by Sam Worthington who delivers an outstanding performance), the son of a wealthy local farmer, sparking a developing romance in all its complexity. Joe's relationship with Heidi challenges his ideas of sexuality, class, and his future, while Heidi, illuminated by the lives of others and the power of forgiveness, discovers she is more than she had realized.
