Vincent T. Webb (Nick Holte) and Lyle Carter (Jeff Bridges) were once the best of friends - training thoroughbred horses in 1970's California, tearing up the highways in a '58 Buick, spending nights in a hillside around a campfire. Twenty years on, Carter is the multi-millionnaire head of a Kentucky horse farm, whilst Vincent (alias Vinnie) is a wrecked, deluded would-be private detective living on the edge in Los Angeles. Some dark event in their past has put an unbelievable gulf between them, and the time has come, in Vincent's mind, to settle the score tricking Carter into traveling back to California, he himself sets off to Kentucky on a journey to find Rosie, the girl he once loved (Sharon Stone), and offer an opportunity for retribution to the man (Albert Finney) whose life was destroyed all those years ago because of them.
