A cell-phone-wielding movie crew invades a quaint New England town. The screenwriter of the movie, Joe White (Phillip Seymour Hoffman), is the only witness to a heartthrob indiscretions of one movie star (Alec Baldwin) with a local teenage girl (Julia Stiles). The director (William H. Macy) and aggressive producer (David Paymer) pressure Joe to put aside his convictions for the sake of the movie they are making and his future writing career. Meanwhile, Joe falls for a local bookseller (Rebecca Pidgeon), who challenges him to stand up for the truth.
