Journalist Harry Mitchell (Gargan) visits a sick columnist who's about to break open a political scandal. When the columnist is murdered Mitchell begins a frantic search for an album identifying Americans who had made wartime deals with the Nazis. Endfield wrote the screenplay from his CBS radio play and shot it in L.A. in ten days for $125,000. A story of chase and counter-chase is played out in surreal gloom and shadow, and features untold heavies, a femme fatale (Lord) and a notably obtuse cop (Byrd).
