In a fit of rage, drug-addicted aspiring writer Charles Régnier hurls his four-year-old son Michel against the kitchen wall, prompting his wife Hélène to defend them by striking Charles repeatedly with a frying pan. As Michel recovers in the hospital from a broken leg and concussion, Hélène, a bartender solely supporting the family amid disdain from her wealthy father-in-law Ludovic for her lower-class roots, rents a nearby boarding house room to stay close. Seeking divorce and custody, she hires a lawyer, but Ludovic enlists desperate lowlife Paul Thomas to dig up dirt on her. Pretending illness, Paul moves in and, finding nothing, fabricates evidence to ruin her, until plans unravel.
