The Hands That Feed Us

In April 2020 Devon Cooke journeys from Vancouver Island to Nova Scotia, living and working on farms to learn how Canadian farmers make money and whether they can afford to feed the country. Farmers derive wealth from stewarding the land, yet most need off-farm jobs because food prices remain low. Rising farmland costs exceed earnings, allowing only large corporations to secure financing. Canadians must choose between sustaining a debt-driven system favoring multinationals or supporting an economy where family farmers decide land use.
