In the Jewish enclave of New York's Lower East Side, hapless inventor Mendel remains constantly in debt as he spends all his (and other people's) money tinkering with machines meant to bring him riches. He eventually creates a dishwashing machine and teams up with his matchmaking, rent-collecting brother-in-law Bernard and Bernard's partner to market it. Their success sparks family strife, prompting Mendel's wife Zelda to move uptown with her newfound wealth while Mendel constructs a luxurious townhouse on the East Side. Financial complications ultimately lead to Zelda and Mendel's reconciliation and comeuppance for the scheming wheelers and dealers involved.
