Restorer Stefano is hired by Mayor Solmi to restore Buono Legnani's painting of St. Sebastian in a village church near Ferrara, recommended by friend Dr. Antonio Mazza. He learns Legnani, known as "The Painter of the Agony" for depicting near-death subjects, vanished years ago without a trace. Stefano encounters odd local Lidio and has a fling with a departing nymphomaniac teacher. As Antonio uncovers a dark secret about Legnani and the villagers, he dies suspiciously, ruled a suicide. Evicted from his hotel, Stefano moves to a paraplegic woman's isolated house, begins an affair with substitute teacher Francesca, and faces eerie disturbances. After acid damages the painting, they plan to flee, but alcoholic driver Coppola reveals the house of the laughing windows' secret, too late to escape the village's mysteries.
