The Lost Weekend

Don Birnam (Ray Milland), a writer sober for only a few days, is supposed to spend the weekend with his brother Wick (Phillip Terry). Eager for a drink, he persuades his girlfriend (Jane Wyman) to take Wick to a show, then slips away to his local bar and misses the departing train. After confessing to the bartender (Howard da Silva) how his addiction took hold, Don spirals into a weekend-long bender that may well be his last.
