Teresa de Cepeda y Ahumada (Paz Vega), the daughter of a nobleman in Avila, does not accept the destiny expected of women in this period. She feels there must be something more. In her search for greater things she enters the enclosed convent of the Incarnation. But her disappointment could not be greater; she quickly discovers that inside the convent walls the same materialism and frivolity she is trying to run from, reigns as well: wealthy nuns with large dowries served by poor, hungry and barefooted nuns while corruption and hypocrisy rule in a convent with very relaxed habits.
