Elderly Thomas Van Hazebrouck (who has dubbed himself Toto, after a childhood fantasy) reflects on his ordinary life through flashbacks and fantasies of alternate paths. As a boy, convinced he was switched at birth with wealthy neighbor Alfred, he imagines battling fate as a secret agent, yet becomes a land surveyor in reality. Feeling he has lived the wrong life, Thomas awakens in his nursing home and sets out to confront Alfred, briefly claiming his intended destiny in an attempt that ends unexpectedly.
