Singer Estelita Rodriguez arrives from Cuba to perform at her uncle Ignacio Ortega's New York nightclub, Club Maraca, where racketeer Norman "Normie the Knife" James forces a partnership by threatening her and pursues her unwanted affections. Mistaking professor Stratford E. Carver for Norman, Estelita traps him, falls instantly in love upon hearing bells, and poses as his cleaning lady to learn about his criminal research. Jealous fiancee Sylvia breaks their engagement after seeing Estelita kiss Stratford. Estelita helps Stratford by teaching mobster ways and recording thugs' confessions. Norman attacks, but Stratford fights back. Amid chases and mix-ups, they evade mobsters, deliver evidence to police, arrest the crooks, and ignite their romance as bells ring.
