Two Spirits

Fred Martinez lived as nádleehi, a male-bodied person with a feminine nature viewed as a special gift in his ancient Navajo culture that once honored integrated genders. At sixteen he endured a brutal murder by a man who bragged of crushing a fag, becoming one of the youngest hate-crime victims. His mother's loss exposes the dangers where discriminations meet and affirms the courage to be oneself amid tradition, controversy, sex, spirit, freedom, and fear.
