In 1920 Inge journeys from Norway to rural Minnesota for her arranged marriage to Norwegian farmer Olaf, where bureaucracy and prejudice over her German citizenship and the war bring hardships. She resides on the farm thereafter, sharing her life stories with her grandson. Upon her death in 2004, Lars confronts the decision to sell the family farm or preserve its legacy, guided by memories of Inge.
