In contemporary Ho Chi Minh City, an unnamed cyclo driver (Le Van Loc) lives in subsistence with his grandfather and two sisters, carrying a heavy debt to pay for the bike that supports the family. When his bike is stolen, he is forced into crime to pay for the loss, working under a quiet, contemplative thug (Tony Leung Chiu-wai) known as the Poet. At the same time and unbeknownst to him, his older sister (Trần Nữ Yên Khê) falls for the Poet and is lured into sex work.
