Though only seven, Josh Waitzkin (Max Pomeranc) looks at a chessboard and anticipates moves that mature players do not see. A malleable boy with incredible talent for the game, he hones it playing blitz with hustlers and hobos until his father, a sportswriter determined to make him champion, takes him to world renowned coach Bruce Pandolfini, who calls Josh the second coming of Bobby Fischer. Family struggles follow as the mother fears cultivating the genius may hurt the child, and father and son learn they cannot lose their love for each other.
