In 1942, during the Battle of the Atlantic, the crew of U96, one of the famed German U boats known as the gray wolves, endures a desperate life and death struggle to harass and destroy English shipping while facing heavy losses from superior destroyer escorts. Endless hours of claustrophobic boredom give way to terror when confronting the enemy, as the submariners maintain their professionalism, attempt impossible missions, and strive to understand and obey the ideology of the government under which they serve amid the tragic waste of war.
