    Dans l'Allemagne d'après-guerre, Irene Wagner (Bergman) cache une liaison adultère à son mari éminent (Mathias Wieman). Lorsque l'ex-petite amie jalouse de son amant (Renate Mannhardt) commence à la faire chanter, Irene plonge dans un tourbillon de culpabilité, d'anxiété et de paranoïa, sa relation extraconjugale se désagrégeant au milieu d'une tension sombre et d'un tourment psychologique.
